Sacred Places: War Memorials in the Australian Landscape
Published in Hardcover by The Miegunyah Press (09 November, 1998)
Authors: Kenneth Stanley Inglis and Jan Brazier
Average review score:

do not forget this
Inglis took 15 years to write this book. The book has been written in easy to read non-academic style that makes for easy access by the casual reader. I read this book with ease finding it full of useful and interesting facts. Inglis does not attempt to analyse the theory behind memory or memory representation but does allow enough material for the investigative reader to develop his or her own thesis.

In short it is a long book, but a good book and certainly one that helps to remind us that there are those that we should not forget.

A great intro to SEM/TEM!
As an SEM/EDS (read the book) process engineer working with technicians at many different levels, I have found this book to be an invaluable resource. It is written at very basic level making it accessible to anyone, with or without a scientific background. Whenever someone wants to know more about how the SEM functions then I can tell them in a five minute spiel, I give them a copy of this book. The material is slightly dated (early 90's technology), but is still relevant to anyone in the field today. A great book on all of the basics.

Science and Creation
Published in Paperback by University Press of America (28 September, 1990)
Author: Stanley L. Jaki
Average review score:

Jaki examines one of the great fundamental questions
The temporal nature of the universe of matter is one of the fundamental questions examined by all societies from antiquity. For those who who have taken this issue seriously, "fundamental philosophical considerations are at play in the acceptance of the idea of a universe that goes on forever through a supreme cycle." Jaki sifts through the details of those considerations with great skill and energy spanning the range from the ancient Hindu and Babylonian cultures to modern scientific thinkers of this century.

I had the great fortune to work through this volume with the author in a graduate course at Seton Hall University in the early eighties. Your understanding of the history and philosophy of science will be greatly enriched by investing your reading effort in this remarkable book.

Searches and Seizures

Author: Stanley Elkin

Three Novellas by a Great Poet
Stanley Elkin had a wonderful gift for colorful language and a breezy style, coupled with a narrative gift that brought the reader inside the heads of his characters. "The Bailbondsman," "The Making of Ashenden," and "The Condominium" are good examples of these gifts. The range of incident, humor, violence and dramatic confrontation shown in these novellas were marks of Elkin's style. I especially recommend "The Bailbondsman," for in addition its odd twists the story has depth and suspense and surprise. The narrator notices everything, even "the roller coaster" of a man's fly when he sits. You have to be ready to be shocked, but you will also find a whimsical streak in the writing that delights. Elkin's final novel, "Mrs. Ted Bliss," might have been a continuation of "The Condominium." Highly recommended for all who appreciate fine writing or who are trying to write on their own.

Old Good Stanley Fish With Vintage Genius Brilliance
Boy, I liked the book. Fish really knows thing about seventeenth-century literature. The easiest part to begin may be the chapter about John Bunyan. I think Stanley Fish has his most brilliant moments with something called rhetoric; I mean, he considers the ways these texts works and especially, what is the relationship between text as an act and text's so called plain meaning. Fish's famous essay on Freud has something in common with these masterpieces. I moderate myself Stanley Fish List and sitemaster Stanley Fish Resources Center and want to greet all Stanley Fish People there in the wide world. Reading his reading makes you a better reader for great many texts, a sensitive person in a textual world.
